MEDICAL USE OF CBD

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) Regulates and supports:

  • inflammation

  • immune function

  • sleep

  • digestion

  • mobility

  • cognition

  • cardiovascular function

  • neuro-protection

  • mood

  • sleep

  • discomfort

  • strengthens and improves mitochondrial function (each cells power source)

  • support damaged cells

In essence, the main function of the ECS is the regulation of the bodies homeostasis.  When the body falls out of homeostasis, dis-ease or disease sets in.  The ECS is our bodies self defense system.

Cannabinoid receptors are scattered throughout the body, embedded in cell membranes, and are believed to be more numerous than any other receptor system.  Researchers have identified two cannabinoid receptors: CB1, predominantly present in the nervous system, connective tissues, gonads, glands, and organs; and CB2, predominantly found in the immune system and its associated structures. There is speculate there may be a third cannabinoid receptor waiting to be discovered.

Endocannabinoids are the substances our bodies naturally make to stimulate the above receptors. The two most well understood of these molecules are called anandamide and 2- arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG).   A functional cannabinoid system is essential for health.  From the embryo, to birth, to adolescence, to responding to disease or injuries, endocannabinoids help us survive in a quickly changing and increasingly hostile environment.

Scientists have discovered 104 different cannabinoids in the cannabis plant and it seems that number just climbed to 111 due to the discover of 7 new cannabinoids in recent years with more surely to come.

The most famous cannabinoid is THC which creates the psychoactive reaction that cannabis is known for.  The cannabinoid most famously studied for medical value is cannabidiol (CBD).  Here are a few studies on CBD:

  • Back pain: A recent study showed CBD treatments led to a significant decrease in disk degeneration, which is the leading cause of back pain the US (1)

  • Nerve pain: a comprehensive review showed that CBD treatments improved pain levels significantly for patients suffering from nerve pain (2)

  • Joint pain, swelling, and inflammation was reduced by as much as 47% in a study published in the European Journal of Pain. (3)

  • One study showed that a substance found in cannabis treatments were 30x more effective than aspirin and 10x more effective than morphine in treating causes of pain. (4)

OTHER HEALTH BENEFITS OF CBD:
ANTI-EPILEPTIC
VASORELAXANT
ANTISPASMODIC
ANTI-ISCHEMIC
ANTI-DIABETIC
ANTI-OXIDANT
IMPROVES LIVER AND BRAIN FUNCTIONS
PREVENTS MOVEMENT DISORDERS

WHY NASAL DELIVERY OF CBD?

The nasal mucosal is a therapeutically viable route for systemic and localized CBD delivery, and a favourable way to circumvent blood brain barrier (BBB). Nasal route is easily accessible and reliable because of its porous epithelial membrane that provides you a rapid absorption of CBD into your systemic circulation, thereby circumventing the hepatic first pass elimination associated with gastrointestinal CBD absorption via oral administration.
Other benefits of CBD nasal delivery include:
  • Intranasal CBD delivery enables CBD dose reduction = Less Expensive
  • Rapid attainment of therapeutic blood levels, and quicker onset of pharmacological activity with fewer side effects
  • Favorable tolerability profile
  • Nasal CBD administration minimizes the lag time associated with oral delivery
  • Offers non-invasiveness and self-administration
  • Essentially painless
